The Very Best of Gene Wolfe [signed jhc] Gene Wolfe 9781848630277 Books
If you love the shorter fiction format and enjoy quality--and I mean HIGH quality writing--then this collection is for you. Unfortunately, THIS ONE is really hard to find and when you do, it's crazy expensive. So, do this: Get THE BEST OF GENE WOLFE, which is available on Kindle and other formats and is priced normally. All the stories except ONE are in that collection. The missing one: "Christmas Inn." But you can get to read that one by purchasing the NEBULA SHOWCASE 2014. :) I recommend it. "Christmas Inn" is a wonderful speculative holiday tale full of allusions and a riddle and it gets to the heart of Christmas. A delight.
Gene Wolfe stories require attention to get all the full joys. Rereading is part of the great fun, to see what you may have missed. With Christmas here soon, the collection offers a couple of holiday related tales (told in a Wolfeish way). One is a deep and sad one: "And When They Appear." It sticks with you and breaks your heart, but it also has a lot to say about who we are and what Christmas is.
This also contains the Death/Doctor/Island stories.
You cannot go wrong with Mr. Wolfe. This is the man of whom Neil Gaiman (another fave author of mine) said, "He's the finest living male American writer of SF and fantasy – possibly the finest living American writer. Most people haven't heard of him. "
I wish this edition with "Christmas Inn" wasn't so difficult to obtain. But as I showed above, you can have ALL the stories in this VERY BEST volume by buying two others. Or get all but one with THE BEST OF GENE WOLFE: A Definitive Retrospective of His Finest Short Fiction. http://www.amazon.com/The-Best-Gene-Wolfe-Retrospective/dp/B00A18G2Q2
Highly Recommended.

The Very Best of Gene Wolfe [signed jhc] Gene Wolfe 9781848630277 Books Reviews
The Very Best of Gene Wolfe is a great collection of Gene Wolfe's short stories. I think that Tor Books and PS Publishing have done an excellent job with this collection. It's great that they gathered all these stories to one book, because many readers may only know that Gene Wolfe has written the excellent The Book of the New Sun series and aren't aware of his fascinating short stories.
I think that the introduction by Kim Stanley Robinson is worth mentioning, because it contains lots of useful and good information about Gene Wolfe and his stories. This introduction tells what kind of things have affected Gene Wolfe's writing style. I thought it was very interesting to read about Gene Wolfe's life and writings.

All the stories in this collection are good, so it was a bit difficult to choose my favourite stories. If I had to choose the best story, I'd choose "The Fifth Head of Cerberus", because it's an excellent example of literary science fiction. It's a fantastic and a bit cryptic story, because its secrets are revealed gradually to the reader. It's a story, which must be read from start to finish in one sitting without pauses in order to fully appreciate what's going on.
That's all I'm going to say about these stories, because I think that every reader should make their own opinions about them.
Because all the stories are worth reading, I highly recommend this collection to all readers who like good speculative fiction. Gene Wolfe's stories are excellent and they make the reader think about different things. I must say that it's truly amazing how versatile a writer he is - he can write almost anything from fantasy to science fiction. Besides being versatile he writes rich and nuanced prose.
